Dining halls, some other facilities will keep regular hours, despite emergency campus closure

University of Maryland’s campus will be closed for the remainder of April 24, due to poor air quality from an ongoing fire at a nearby under-construction apartment building, according to the University of Maryland Police Department.

The Fuse 47 apartment building fire was first reported around 9:30 a.m. Over 200 firefighters were on the scene as of 1:30 p.m. The building is located just off  Route 1, across the street from the Varsity and View apartments largely inhabited by UMD students, and less than a mile from the school’s main entrance.

University President Wallace Loh announced via Twitter that campus would close at 1 p.m. Several campus resources have since taken to Twitter to announce their plans for the rest of the day.

  • All campus libraries are closed.
  • Academic building cafes are closed.
  • Eppley Recreation Center open until 8 p.m., all other RecWell facilities are closed.
  • Intramural and club sports practices and games are cancelled
  • The Clarice is closed.
  • Stamp Student Union and the food court are open until 3 p.m.
  • The health center is open until 6 p.m.
  • The Diner, South Campus Dining Hall and 251 North will remain open normal hours.
  • Campus convenience shops will remain open normal hours.
  • Shuttle buses will run normally, with overflow buses provided as needed.
  • UMD Golf Course will remain open normal hours.
  • Campus parking lots are currently unrestricted and gates are lifted, DOTS will resume parking restrictions at 7 a.m. Tuesday.
