Update: University Provost Jennifer King Rice announced her decision Thursday, April 20.
Lucy Dalglish is retiring after 11 years as dean of the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland. The university established a search committee to find candidates composed of faculty and students from the college as well as staff from the provost’s office in October 2022. Keith Marzullo, the dean of the College of Information Studies, leads the committee. Dalglish will step down in June 2023, according to an email sent to Merrill College students, staff and faculty.
The search committee identified four finalists for the job, including USA Today Editor-in-Chief Nicole Carroll, Merrill College Associate Dean Rafael Lorente, University of North Texas Professor Dorothy Bland and American University School of Communication Dean Sam Fulwood III. Stories Beneath the Shell profiled all four candidates to shine a light on their qualifications and background. Merrill College faculty and staff voted overwhelmingly to recommend the provost hire Lorente as the next dean on Monday, April 3, sources familiar with the vote said. University Provost Jennifer King Rice will make the ultimate call on whom to hire. Her decision is expected within days.
