Jammin’ at Maryland held a concert in the Adele H. Stamp Student Union at 7 p.m. on Saturday, featuring over nine performing acts and an encore. 

JAM is a student-run organization that is meant for non-music majors to “jam out” in a low-commitment club space, meeting only twice a week. 

Many of the acts featured Siddharth Gupta, a junior public health science major, who both sang and played guitar. Gupta, the JAM treasurer, joined the club in 2019 after searching for a fun place to continue playing music. 

“I still felt the adrenaline rush after the performance,” Gupta said. “Primarily I was just tired, but I still felt pretty great.”

Although this was JAM’s first concert of 2024, they have played many events before. 

“Last year’s showcase at Hoff Theater was really chaotic but successful,” Gupta said. “Now there’s photos of that event on the walls of Hoff.”

The acts displayed many different genres of music, ranging from “Clay Pigeons” by Michael Cera to “Killing In The Name” by Rage Against The Machine. 

Sarah Mizrachi, a sophomore psychology major, sang as the lead vocalist in many sets, showcasing her range. Performing in three acts, Mizrachi sang “Risk” by Mega Mango, “Run” by Joji, and “Cherry Waves” by Deftones.  

“Fall semester I did the treble choir,” Mizrachi said. “I quit and joined JAM. I ended up staying because I really liked how welcoming and fun everyone was.”

The Prince George’s Room was set up so people could sit comfortably, but there was also a standing section. Many of the performers, including Gupta, encouraged the audience to “get up and dance.” 

Things got so intense toward the end of the concert that Nicholas Cassel, a freshman engineering major, split his drumstick into two pieces. 

“I get a little too into it sometimes,” Cassel laughed. He admitted that this is the fourth stick he has broken this semester. “I also cut my hand during the song ‘Sober’ when I missed the side of my snare drum,” he said.
