UMD students take part in Maryland Day

University of Maryland students from across different schools had the opportunity to show off their work for visitors during Maryland Day.

The annual event, which includes hundreds of free events for the wider Maryland community, allows UMD students to participate in a variety of ways.

Cameron Hobbs, a senior engineering student, displayed a model roller coaster project in front of the Jeong H. Kim Engineering Building.

“It’s nice to be able to show off our interests and the things we’ve learned with people of all ages and knowledge of the topics,” Hobbs said.

Some other events at Maryland Day included Maryland Basketball players signing autographs, the Red vs. White Maryland Football spring game and displays from various student organizations including Maryland Percussion and Women in Aeronautics and Astronautics.

Freshman journalism major Daniel Stein had a different view of Maryland day: through the lens of a camera.

Stein was responsible for filming an event called “Dogs and the Human Connection.” He said he appreciated the chance to highlight a program in Warrior Canine Connection that works for a good cause — training service dogs for veterans.

The freshman also reflected on the scale of Maryland Day.

“I thought it was just really cool to see how many events we had because I’ve never been to Maryland Day before,” Stein said.

Ryan Martin, also a freshman journalism major, had a similar experience to Stein, covering Maryland Day for a journalism class.

“I thought it was really interesting that it was part of my journalism curriculum,” he said. “My journalism classes really challenged me to go out in the real world and do actual storytelling at the biggest day at (UMD).”
