Campus joys: The little things that make Terps smile

By Logan Midler

Ask a University of Maryland student what makes them smile, and the answers aren’t always big moments. More often, it’s the small joys like going on walks, getting Maryland Dairy or enjoying a favorite spot that makes them happy.

For nearly every student, though, the best part of campus is spending time with friends.

“Seeing my friends,” said Diya Patel, a freshman psychology major, when asked what makes her happy.

So does ice cream at Maryland Dairy, Patel said. The ice cream parlor, home to UMD-themed flavors like Fear the Turtle, opened in Adele H. Stamp Student Union in 2014, but the dairy program has existed since the late 1890s. Maryland Dairy has become a favorite stop for Patel.

Tarini Nagenalli, a freshman chemistry major, agreed. She enjoys going back to her apartment at the end of the day when all her roommates are there. Walking around campus also helps her unwind after stressful days.

For transfer students Jacob Palo, a junior communications major; and Annmarie Weaver, a junior economics major, the campus itself brings them joy.

“Walking through McKeldin Mall … gives me a boost,” said Palo. At his old school, there wasn’t an inviting space for students to gather outside and soak up the sun. He likes knowing that UMD has unifying spaces where students can be part of the community.

Weaver often works on the steps outside McKeldin Library because she enjoys being outside when she does her work. The 16.28-acre lawn area, lined with trees and featuring the ODK Fountain in the middle, is one of the largest academic malls in the country and a popular hangout for students on sunny days. For Daisy Wang, a freshman economics and finance major, joy comes from creativity and movement. Wang spends time in the makerspace in Prince Frederick Hall. This part of the Design Cultures & Creativity program gives her a place to test ideas hands-on, while going on runs with friends helps her recharge.

From seeing friends to spending time on McKeldin Mall, Maryland students find joy in countless ways. For some, joy comes from the simplest perks. Mariam Ukondwa, a sophomore marketing major, highlighted “free things” as her favorite thing on campus.
