The Washington Huskies shocked Maryland Terrapin football fans with a massive fourth-quarter comeback, which ended the Terrapins’ undefeated season.
The Terrapins played the Huskies on Oct. 4 at the sold-out SECU Stadium. The Terrapins began the game with a streak of 4-0 heading into the game, but the final score was 24-20 in an unfortunate turn of events for the Terrapins.
The Terrapins started the game strong with a field goal, made by freshman place kicker Sean O’Haire, and a touchdown, made by freshman quarterback Malik Washington, resulting in 10 points at the end of the first quarter. The team stalled the Huskies from scoring any points at this time, according to ESPN.
The Terrapins’ initial success caused elation in fans like sophomore mechanical engineering major Lucy Ellis, who fed off the energy of the packed game.
“The stadium was so packed that I felt it was just more exciting than normal,” Ellis said.
The Terrapins began the second quarter on a positive note as they scored another three points from O’Haire’s field goal attempt. The Huskies remained off the scoreboard, according to ESPN.
As the teams took a break during halftime, sophomore environmental science and psychology double major Tyson Davis assumed the Terrapins would win the game smoothly.
“I think everyone had confidence at that point, it was 20-0, so I thought it was already won,” Davis said.
The Terrapins and Huskies returned from the locker rooms at the start of the third quarter. However, the Terrapins’ strong lead began to shift.
The Terrapins successfully scored another seven points after junior tight end AJ Szymanski made another touchdown, and O’Haire converted the extra point. However, the Huskies finally joined the Terrapins on the scoreboard after their senior place kicker, Grady Gross, made a field goal, according to ESPN.
The Huskies’ field goal caused no fear in Davis when it happened. He said he assumed the Terrapins’ lead would remain safe from the Huskies since they only scored three points.
The Huskies quickly focused on catching up to the Terrapins. In the fourth quarter, the Huskies’ Denzel Boston, Dezmen Roebuck and Jonah Coleman each scored touchdowns for a total of 21 points. The Huskies prevented the Terrapins from scoring any further points, according to ESPN.
Four points caused the Terrapins to lose their winning streak this season. The Terrapins’ record now stands at 4-1.
Many fans, including Davis, left the game before the sudden loss due to the Terrapins’ huge lead at the time..
“I thought we were still fine and I left at the end of the third quarter, but it was still 20-3,” Davis said.
