Washington Huskies’s squash the Maryland Terrapins undefeated record

By Lena LaJoy

On Oct. 4, The Washington Huskies shocked football fans in the sold out SECU stadium with a massive fourth quarter comeback, ending the Terrapins undefeated season.

The Terrapins concluded the first quarter up 10-0 according to ESPN,  starting the quarter off strong with a field goal by freshman placekicker Sean O’Haire, and a touchdown by freshman quarterback Malik Washington.

Midway through the third quarter, the Huskies were trailing behind Maryland 20-0, leaving Maryland fans ecstatic. The Terrapins had just scored 7 points after tight end AJ Szymanski’s touchdown and a field goal attempt by O’Haire.

The momentum shifted in the final quarter, when the Huskies’s Denzel Boston, Dezmen Roebuck and Jonah Coleman each scored touchdowns gaining a total of 21 points for the team, while the Terrapins scored none, reported ESPN

Many fans left the game before the final quarter due to the Terrapins sustained lead throughout the majority of the game. In the past, students left early for opposite reasons, with the Terrapins struggling to stay on par with other Big Ten teams.
However, hype around new players, like freshman quarterback Washington who recently secured partnerships with Pepsi and Ledo’s Pizza, according to University of Maryland Athletics, has been generating positive recognition for Maryland football.

Arepa Zone opens new College Park location

By Sophia Yodice

Arepa Zone opened its seventh location in College Park on Sept. 27, marking the Venezuelan restaurant’s debut in introducing its cuisine and culture to the University of Maryland community.

The restaurant, known for its slogan “Bringing Arepas to the DMV since 2014,” began as a food truck before expanding to six locations across the Washington area. The new College Park location features the restaurant’s first mixology bar.

Arepa Zone specializes in traditional Venezuelan dishes, particularly arepas, which aregrilled cornmeal patties filled with meats, cheeses and other ingredients. The menu also features items such as cachapas – sweet corn pancakes – and tequeños–fried cheese sticks.

The restaurant’s opening adds to a growing list of international dining options available near the University of Maryland campus, reflecting the area’s increasingly diverse food scene.

The restaurant’s founders emphasize accessibility and community engagement as central to the brand’s expansion, often positioning new locations near universities and cultural centers.

“Being Hispanic, I think it’s important to bring in diversity nearby a school that is considered a predominantly white institution…and arepas are delicious,” sophomore math major Gabriela Christian-Torres said.

The College Park location is open daily and offers dine-in, takeout and delivery options. Arepa Zone’s next event will host two mixologists on Dec. 6. More information can be found on their social media, @arepazone, on all platforms.
