Maryland men’s soccer defeated the University of Connecticut 3-0 at Ludwig Field on Nov. 29, advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals for the first time in seven years.

The Terps, who fought through uneven stretches all season, put together one of their most complete performances in a pivotal spot.

Senior Albi Ndrenika opened the scoring in the 27th minute, cleaning up a rebound off freshman Rocket Ritarita’s shot to give Maryland early momentum. The freshman delivered again just before halftime, blasting home a second goal and sending the Terps into the break with a 2-0 cushion.

Maryland outshot Connecticut 23-5, suffocating the Huskies on both ends of the field.

Head coach Sasho Cirovski praised his team’s composure as they handled the highest stakes of their season.

“This was a fantastic, complete-team victory today,” Cirovski said during the postgame press conference. “I’m so proud of the team.”

Cirovski highlighted Ritarita’s impact off the bench.

“He hasn’t started a lot of games, but that doesn’t diminish the value he brings to our team every day,” he said.

A steady emotional anchor through Maryland’s postseason push, Ndrenika said the group’s belief has fueled their turnaround. His four goals this season have often come at critical moments, and he claimed the win was a product of shared belief.

“This season taught me that you kind of have to be a psycho to think that out of 200-some D1 teams that you’re going to be the one to win it all,” he said. “That obsession has bled through a lot of people and especially through me.”

Maryland sealed the win in the 88th minute when junior forward Luke Van Heukelum tapped in a late insurance goal, sending Ludwig Field into a final burst of celebration. Now the Terps stand just one win away from reaching the national championship.

On Saturday, Dec. 6, the Terps hosted the Washington Huskies to keep their championship hopes alive.
