The University of Maryland Student Government Association released the results of their special election on Monday. Voice4All candidates won all three executive positions and over half of the legislative positions followed suit.

Sulayman Khan was elected student body president with 836 votes, alongside Mariam Almuhammad as executive vice president with 858 votes and Anthony Lu as vice president of financial affairs with 910 votes.

The special election received a total of 1943 votes. For fall 2026, UMD has 31,333 undergraduate students enrolled.

Voice4All won 16 out of the 24 legislative positions up for election. One of the two seats for undergraduate studies representatives is currently held in a tie between two Voice4all candidates, Nooran Abdallah and Zakariyya El-Ghazali, who each received six votes.

In a statement  to Stories Beneath the Shell, SGA Head Elections Commissioner Leonard Fomin said, “Whenever election results in a tie, the SGA Election Commission will host a run off election for the given constituency. The runoff election would entail preparing the electronic voting systems, setting a voting period and promoting the runoff in the constituency.”

As of Thursday, the Elections Commission is still in the process of reaching out to the two tied candidates to gauge interest in a runoff election.

Voice4all’s mass wins were a point of excitement for Executive Vice President elect Mariam Almuhammad.

“Seeing Voice4all win as a collective makes the experience even more meaningful, because I know how much time, effort and heart every person on our ticket put into this campaign,” she said.

“Coming into this position is really surreal,” said President elect Sulayman Khan. “This position is one of importance because … we’re put into this position by the student body themselves.”

Almuhammad said that the first plan of action among the newly elected executive board members is to strengthen the connection between SGA and the student body.

“One of the first and biggest priorities I have is making sure students feel like they actually

have a voice in SGA and that their concerns lead to action,” she said. “Sulayman and I want to focus on strengthening the relationships between SGA and the student body, especially around the issues that shape student’s everyday experiences.”

“I hope students feel comfortable reaching out to us, sharing their concerns, and holding us accountable throughout the year. We want to build a stronger, more connected UMD community where all students feel heard, supported and included,” Almuhammad said.

All newly elected officials will be inaugurated on Oct. 19. The full breakdown of results can be read here.
